Webinar on “Exploring Sexuality and Intimacy after a cancer diagnosis”
26/05/2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
We are delighted to let you know Cork ARC Cancer Support House are hosting a ‘Exploring Sexuality and Intimacy after a Cancer Diagnosis’ Webinar that will take place on Wednesday 26th May from 10am-12pm.
Cancer and the treatments used for cancer can impact how a woman feels about her body, her sexuality, her attractiveness and her confidence with being intimate. This is very often because of physical challenges such as pain, scarring, loss of how a body part looked, and sometimes the loss of a body part, or a body function, some surgeries, and some of the treatments can change your natural ability and ease to be intimate with a partner and have sexual intercourse. The other side effects of fatigue, low mood and energy, low libido, altered body image, anxiety and fear add to the psychological and emotional effects for a woman and how she feels about herself.
The impact of all the above brings challenges to a woman’s close relationships, and intimacy can be a very real struggle. It can hamper a woman in regaining a sense desire and that feeling of being alive, very often at a time when that close intimate connection is really needed.
Sexual intercourse and intimacy issues are often difficult topics for many and sexual dysfunction remains under diagnosed and under treated. However communicating about these issues is the first step in dealing with them. That is why we are bringing you this Webinar. You will hear from Yvonne O’Meara, a systemic psychotherapist and psychosocial oncologist, and Orla McCarthy, a women’s physiotherapist who both have a special interest and a wealth of experience in helping women with these problems.
